  • Seeing all this makes me want a modern day, low spec device that forces devs to innovate. Also makes me miss the days of games not having to be updated and downloaded when you buy a physical copy.

  • That Driv3r port being featured alongside all these other 3d GBA games really highlights how impressive of a feat it was, graphically speaking.

  • Old sports game on low quality hardware: *Use 3D*
Project DIVA series, which mostly had been made for high performance (not PSP): *Uses pre renders for most of the stages*

  • The Simpsons: Road Rage for Game Boy Advance also uses a relatively well working pseudo three dimensional engine. Ironically, most consider it better than the engine which Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride (a "port" of a game which the home console version of The Simpsons: Road Rage is based off of, so much to the point that the companies involved were sued by SEGA).

  • Mate cracking video, i am now drowning in a visoucus pool of nostalgia for my old purple GBA. But one game that i think you may have missed is the very english 2002 gem of Robot Wars – Extreme Destruction, not only was it 3d, but had a weird physics engine and a 3d robot maker, and it is fucking awesome, Give it a look! But yeah great video!

  • about the realistic driving physics, im pretty sure Colin McRae Rally 2 had the most realistic physics, as you actually had to break before turns, and countersteer to avoid spinning out so drafting took some skill as opposed to just turning and yanking the handbrake. ive played on the same simulators real racecar drivers use to train, and while it's not as realist as the real racing sims on gardwar that can handle it better it uis by far the most realistic on the gba, although i guess technically it wouldn't be on this list as whil it did have a fully 3d car, the world was a mode 7 like plain with some sprites for bumps and any walls/barriers wherejust a whole bunch of wall sprites lined up in a row. whil it was visually unimpressive, phrome a realistic driving physics standpoint, it was AMAZING for gba.

  • Maybe because I'm more aware of the PC game, but I think you really undersold the Wing Commander Prophecy release. That game really did capture all the modeled ships and stuff from the PC release, maybe a few less polygons yet not really able to tell with such a lower resolution and screen though. All the stages made it in, waypoints, explosions, sizzling shield sparks, the works. It even has some levels of speech retained during flight takeoff to landing time. It handled pretty smoothly, more than enough to take down ships at least. I never felt it chug or get uglier when a lot of action with cap ships was going on either (I finished it.) To me it was the high point of 3D games on the system aside from cars, still V-Rally really shines.

  • I played a lot of Pokemon and a few classic games like Kirby and even original Paperboy for hours on my Gameboy Advanced. One of the best systems I had next to the Gameboy Color.

  • It really was a crazy time. It seemed like I went from being wowed by something ugly but technically impressive like Ecks vs. Sever or the GBA version of Medal of Honor to playing full no bullshit 3d games on the PSP in the span of a year. The PSP was almost too good to believe, especially since I hadn't been following it pre-release so it seemed to just pop up in the store out of nowhere. It was an amazing handheld for it's time. I still freak out when playing a graphically impressive handheld game. Even older last gen games like Dark Souls, Skyrim and Metro Redux seem amazing to me on the Switch, because they're "real" console games that I can play anywhere. I wish the Vita had lived a longer and more fruitful life, but the Switch has taken over and is carrying the torch nicely for handheld 3d games.
